The Flight of the Bumble Bee was originally an interlude in the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan - more properly, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of his son the famous and mighty hero Prince Gvidon Saltanovich and of the beautiful Swan Princess (1899-1900). Based on a Pushkin poem, this tells of a prince who with the magic help of a swan princess turns into a bee and stings the jealous ants who have been plotting his death and that of his mother, the Tsarina. In its operatic setting (Act 3), it has very different clothing to the arrangements for solo instruments in which it is most often heard - and it has been arranged for every instrument from the accordion to the xylophone.
